Author Interview: Dee Garretson +GIVEAWAY

Today I would like to welcome Dee Garretson! She is the author of two great MG books filled with action and suspense.  Plus she is offering up a SIGNED copy of her latest book Wolf Storm!

Wolf Storm
Garretson delivers a fantastic new tween thriller about a young star in a sci-fi movie who must save himself and others when a blizzard and rabid wolves threaten the lives of those on set.

Wildfire Run
Just once Luke Brockett would like to do something slightly dangerous, but when your father is the President of the United States, that is not an option. Always surrounded by Secret Service agents and kept in a bubble of safety, Luke sees Camp David, the presidential retreat in the woods of Maryland, as the only place where he can almost normal. For one week in August, Luke's mother has arranged for Luke to have a 'summer camp' experience, if summer camp had only three kids and the counselors carried automatic weapons. The experience comes to a quick end when a forest fire surrounds Camp David. Luke and his friends are trapped inside, left on their own, the Secret Service agents incapacitated, forcing the three to outwit security systems designed to be unbeatable before the fire gets to them.
Welcome to The O.W.L. Dee!

So glad you could join in The March of Middle Grade and share about your books and writing!

One Answer Questions

Point of View: 3rd
Boy or Girl main character: Boy main character, but girl is very important to story
Genre: outdoor adventure with a twist
More boy or girl book (stereotypically) Boy book-I began writing from a boy’s POV after my son begged me to read some of his favorite MG books. It started out as a challenge to myself, but when I found it came easily to me, I stuck with it.

The Serious Questions!

Why MG instead of any other age level? I like to write exciting stories, and I think in MG you can do that without having to add in some of the blood and gore that seems prevalent in adult fiction. It’s just more fun.

For you MG novel what part are you most excited about? What part do you think they'll enjoy reading the most or was the most fun to write? I am most excited about two parts of it that were fun to research: the wolves, and a little bit about filming movies on location. Wolves are amazing animals and I love movies almost as much as books. I hope readers will be caught up in the excitement of the adventure, to the point where they read it and wonder what they would do in the same situation.

When you were in middle school kind of student were you? I was a good student, but I most liked being with my friends. My favorite subjects were math and science. 7th grade English was mostly grammar, and I didn’t like that, though it’s helpful now.
Did you write then? I wrote a little, mostly animal stories or spy stories.
Did you read? I read quite a bit. My older brother loved science fiction and fantasy and he often gave me his books when he was done with them. I’m still a big fan of both of those genres.

And because it's the owl my standard question always is: WHOOO do you admire when it comes to writing? OR WHOOO do you like to read or really enjoyed in HS or middle school?
I really loved The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, and am still love both the books and the LOTR movies. Mary Stewart’s Merlin trilogy was another favorite. I reread books all the time, so it’s hard for me to remember when I first read something.

The Fun Questions! (based on what 7th graders do!)

Do you chew gum? Yes or No If yes favorite kind? No, I’m a much bigger fan of chocolate.

Do you text? No.

Was school lunch just as yucky then as it is now?! Yes! What was worse was I had to help serve it when I was in 6th grade because they were short-handed and I was one of the few sixth graders to always eat at school. By the time it was my turn to eat, I was sick of the smell of most things, except tater tots!

Thank you Dee for sharing!!! And thanks for giving the need for grammar a shout out!

  6. I think this would be great for building background knowledge on Camp David, which I think most of my students don't know.
